Richard “Rick” Thomas Heckathorn
February 3, 1962 – July 11, 2017
On July 11, 2017, our good friend and colleague Rick Heckathorn went home to be with the Lord after a battle with esophageal cancer. Rick loved the Lord to the end and is now rejoicing with him in heaven.
Rick first came to MAI in 2002 as a volunteer learning the ins and outs of Information Technology (IT). Before long he was on-call with us and then became an employee in 2005.
We watched Rick grow in his love for the Lord during those years, until he became an ardent follower of Christ, who won many young souls to the Lord through the AWANA program at his church. He lived and breathed his love for God. His heart was for missions. His trips to Uganda, Africa, with his church teaching South Sudanese trainers was one of the highlights of his life.
Rick’s love and pride in his sons, Kevin and Randy, was evident as he spoke of them often, asking for prayer in their challenges and praising in their victories.
Shortly before Rick could no longer undergo chemo treatments for his cancer, he took his family to Hawaii. Using a timeshare gifted to him by a member of his church, the family enjoyed an unforgettable experience which will remain with the boys forever. Especially endearing was Rick watching his son Kevin ask his girlfriend for her hand in marriage on a beach in Maui. She said yes!
Rick would often choke up in prayer; he was so very aware of the grandeur of God and his mighty saving power. He talked of heaven and a longing to be there, but as the apostle Paul, he also longed to be on earth, spending time with his sons and those he loved.
Please rejoice with us for our brother Rick, and mourn with us as we feel his loss acutely. We are so grateful for all your prayers. Please continue to remember Rick’s sons, Kevin and Randy, and the rest of the family. If you would like to contribute in a gift to his family, Medical Ambassadors has set up the Heckathorn Family Fund. In addition, the Heckathorn family has requested donations be designated to a cause Rick was passionate about—MAI’s work in East Africa. Donations may be made below or by mailing a check to the Medical Ambassadors home office with a note in the memo line.
