Bringing Life to Gambata through Water
Bringing Life to Gambata: How a Village Took Action for Clean Water
In the rural community of Gambata, Southern Guinea, life during the dry season was a daily struggle. With small rivers and ponds drying up, families were left without access to clean water. Women and children walked over five miles through dense forests just to fetch water—after long hours of farm labor and household work. Children were frequently late to school, illnesses from poor sanitation were common, and the community was trapped in a cycle of hardship and survival.
A Community Takes Ownership
One year ago, CHE was introduced to Gambata, and the community decided to tackle their biggest challenge—lack of clean water. Instead of waiting for outside aid, they took ownership of the solution. With their limited resources, they chose to build an open well, rather than a more expensive borehole. The project was a testament to their resilience, teamwork, and belief that they could create change from within.
Transformation Through Clean Water
Today, Gambata’s families no longer have to walk for miles to collect water. The well now provides abundant, clean water all year round, drastically reducing cases of hygiene-related diseases. Women have more time for their families and farming, and children arrive at school on time, ready to learn.
The most remarkable change? A renewed sense of pride and hope. The people of Gambata have seen firsthand that they are capable of solving their own challenges. This success has inspired them to dream bigger and take on new projects that will further transform their village.
Gambata’s story is a powerful example of how CHE empowers communities to create sustainable change. Rather than relying on outside aid, people are equipped with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to solve their challenges—leading to lasting transformation.
